Alcohol and sleep: why it knocks you out and then wakes you up
A nightcap feels like it helps you fall asleep faster, which it does. What it does to the second half of the night is the part most people miss.
Alcohol is a sedative, and its effect on sleep onset is real: it typically reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and increases deep, slow-wave sleep in the first sleep cycles of the night, which is part of why it feels like it's helping. The problem is what happens as the alcohol is metabolized over the following hours — as blood alcohol level drops, the body rebounds into a lighter, more fragmented sleep state, with reduced REM sleep in the first half of the night followed by a REM rebound and more frequent awakenings in the second half, an effect strong enough to show up clearly on polysomnography.
That second-half disruption is why a night with alcohol often produces the subjective experience of falling asleep easily but waking up repeatedly, or waking too early and being unable to fall back asleep — sleep that looks adequate in total hours but is measurably more fragmented and less restorative than an alcohol-free night for the same person.
Alcohol also relaxes upper airway muscles, which worsens snoring and can meaningfully increase the frequency and severity of obstructive sleep apnea events for people who already have the condition, even at moderate drinking levels — a mechanism worth knowing about specifically for anyone using CPAP, since evening drinking can undercut the treatment's effectiveness that same night regardless of whether the machine is used correctly.
For anyone troubleshooting fragmented sleep or early-morning waking, tracking alcohol timing against sleep quality for a couple of weeks is a simple, informative experiment — the general pattern that holds across the research is that alcohol consumed closer to bedtime and in larger amounts produces more second-half disruption, so timing and quantity are both levers worth adjusting before assuming the problem lies elsewhere.
