A home blood pressure monitor that was accurate at the time of purchase, including one that appears on an independent validation list discussed elsewhere, doesn't necessarily stay accurate indefinitely — like any measurement device, blood pressure monitors can drift out of calibration over time through normal wear, and this drift happens gradually enough that a user often has no obvious signal something has changed until readings are checked directly against a known-accurate reference.
The most practical accuracy check available to most patients: bringing the home monitor to a physician's office visit and comparing a reading taken with the home device, on the same arm at roughly the same time, against the clinical staff's own equipment — a discrepancy beyond a reasonably small margin is worth flagging as a possible calibration issue with the home device rather than assuming the difference reflects a genuine blood pressure change between the two readings.
Cuff wear is a more visible, physically checkable factor worth periodically inspecting directly: a cuff bladder that's lost elasticity, visible cracking in the tubing, or a cuff that no longer closes as snugly as it did when new can all independently affect reading accuracy, separate from any issue with the monitor's internal electronics — a physical inspection catches this category of problem that internal calibration drift wouldn't.
For patients using home readings to guide meaningful treatment decisions — medication dose adjustments, for instance — periodic recalibration checks against a clinical reference, ideally at least once a year and any time a reading seems inconsistent with how a patient actually feels or with recent trends, is a reasonable practice, and manufacturers of higher-end monitors sometimes offer calibration verification services directly worth checking if a specific device's accuracy becomes a genuine concern rather than simply replacing the device without confirming there was actually a problem.
