Blue-light blocking glasses for sleep: the evidence is weaker than the marketing
The blue-light-disrupts-sleep mechanism is real physiology. Whether consumer glasses meaningfully counteract it is a separate, less settled question.
The underlying mechanism is well established: blue wavelength light suppresses melatonin production more than other wavelengths, and evening screen exposure has been shown in lab studies to delay melatonin onset and subjective sleepiness. That's the physiology blue-light-blocking glasses are marketed against.
Where the evidence gets thinner is the consumer product itself — systematic reviews of blue-light-blocking glasses trials have found inconsistent and generally modest effects on actual sleep outcomes, with several trials showing no significant difference in sleep quality or duration compared to control. Filtering strength varies enormously between products, and many marketed glasses filter a smaller fraction of blue light than the amber, near-total-blocking lenses used in the studies with the more positive results.
For people who want to reduce evening blue light exposure, the higher-leverage intervention that's better supported by the research is simply reducing screen use and dimming ambient light in the hour or two before bed — glasses are a reasonable supplement to that habit, not a substitute that lets screen time continue unchanged.
