Why a cold bedroom actually improves sleep — the thermoregulation science
Core body temperature drop is a physiological trigger for sleep onset, and room temperature directly interferes with or supports it.
Core body temperature naturally drops by a degree or two in the hours before and during sleep, and this drop is part of the physiological signal that initiates and maintains sleep — it's not incidental to the sleep-wake cycle, it's mechanistically involved in it. A bedroom that's too warm works against this process by keeping skin and core temperature elevated, which sleep lab studies have consistently linked to more nighttime awakenings and reduced slow-wave (deep) sleep.
Most sleep medicine sources cite a range around 65 to 68°F (18-20°C) as generally optimal for adult sleep, though individual variation is real — the useful principle is the direction (cooler generally helps, especially compared to a warm bedroom) more than a single universal number that applies to everyone identically.
This is also part of why hot flashes during menopause are so disruptive to sleep specifically — the sudden core temperature spike directly interferes with the mechanism sleep depends on, which is a physiological explanation for a symptom that's often described only in terms of discomfort rather than its actual sleep-architecture impact.
