Continuous glucose monitors for non-diabetics: is the data actually useful?
CGMs have moved from prescription-only diabetes tools to over-the-counter wellness devices — what the glucose data means if you don't have diabetes.
Over-the-counter continuous glucose monitors, approved for adults without diabetes, track interstitial glucose in real time via a small sensor worn on the arm, sending readings to a phone app every few minutes. For someone without diabetes, the readings mostly confirm what dietary science already predicts — refined carbohydrates cause faster, larger glucose spikes than fiber-paired meals — but seeing it as personal, real-time data changes behavior for some users in ways abstract nutrition advice doesn't.
The limitation worth knowing: normal glucose variability in non-diabetic people is wider than most users expect, and a single post-meal spike that would be diagnostically meaningful in a diabetic patient is often just normal physiology in someone without insulin resistance. Interpreting CGM data without that context can create anxiety over readings that aren't clinically significant.
Where it has genuine value for non-diabetics: identifying personal patterns (a specific food that spikes you more than expected, the effect of exercise timing on post-meal glucose) and as an early-warning signal if patterns suggest developing insulin resistance — which is worth bringing to a physician rather than self-diagnosing from app data alone.
