'Exercise snacks': what the research on short, scattered activity bursts actually found

'Exercise snacking' — brief bouts of activity, often just a few minutes, spread throughout the day rather than consolidated into a single structured workout — has been studied specifically for its effect on post-meal blood glucose and metabolic markers, with several trials finding that short activity bursts after meals meaningfully blunt post-meal glucose spikes, in some cases comparably to a single longer daily session.
This research is particularly relevant for people with long sedentary stretches (desk-based work) where a single evening workout doesn't offset hours of uninterrupted sitting — the metabolic cost of prolonged, unbroken sitting appears to be at least partly independent of total daily exercise volume, meaning someone who exercises for 45 minutes but then sits still for ten hours may not get the same metabolic benefit as someone who breaks up sitting time more frequently, even with less total structured exercise.
The practical application supported by this research — a few minutes of stair climbing, bodyweight squats, or brisk walking after meals or every hour or so during a sedentary workday — is a genuinely evidence-based complement to, not replacement for, structured exercise, particularly for glucose regulation specifically.
