Gut microbiome diversity: what actually changes it, according to controlled trials
Microbiome science has moved past correlation studies into controlled dietary interventions — the fiber-diversity findings are among the clearest.
Controlled dietary intervention trials — a step up in rigor from the observational microbiome studies that dominated earlier research — have found that dietary fiber diversity, specifically the range of different plant types consumed rather than total fiber quantity alone, correlates with greater gut microbial diversity. One frequently cited study tracking plant food variety found a meaningful diversity difference between people eating a narrow range versus a wide range of plant species weekly, independent of total fiber grams.
Fermented foods have also shown a distinct, separately studied effect — a controlled trial comparing a high-fiber diet to a high-fermented-food diet found the fermented-food group showed increases in microbial diversity and decreases in inflammatory markers that the high-fiber-alone group didn't replicate to the same degree, suggesting the two dietary strategies may work through at least partially different mechanisms.
Where the science remains genuinely unsettled is translating 'more microbial diversity' into specific, individual clinical outcomes — diversity is a reasonable proxy for gut health in current research, but personalized microbiome testing products that claim to prescribe specific foods based on an individual's microbiome profile are considerably ahead of what the current evidence base can actually support with confidence.
