What heart rate variability actually measures — and what your wearable's HRV score doesn't tell you
HRV has become a headline wellness metric. Here's the physiology behind the number and where the interpretation on consumer apps oversimplifies.
Heart rate variability measures the beat-to-beat variation in time between heartbeats, reflecting the balance between sympathetic ('fight or flight') and parasympathetic ('rest and digest') nervous system activity. Higher HRV generally correlates with better cardiovascular fitness, recovery, and stress resilience — but 'generally' is doing real work in that sentence, since HRV is also affected by age, medication, alcohol, hydration, and even measurement time of day.
Consumer wearables typically distill this into a single daily score, which is convenient but loses the underlying signal's complexity — a night of poor sleep, a late dinner, and a genuinely elevated physiological stress response can all produce a similar-looking low-HRV morning, and the app usually can't distinguish which one is driving your number.
The metric is most useful as a personal trend over weeks, not a single day's verdict — comparing your own baseline over time catches meaningful shifts (overtraining, illness onset, chronic stress accumulation) far more reliably than treating any individual day's score as diagnostic.
