Oxygen concentrator power consumption: sizing a generator or battery backup that actually works
An oxygen concentrator is not a device you want discovering the hard way that your backup power can't run. The wattage math, and why continuous-flow and portable units have very different backup power needs.
Backup power planning for an oxygen-dependent household starts with a number most people never check until they need it: the concentrator's actual running wattage, printed on its nameplate or in the owner's manual, typically in the 300-600 watt range for a home stationary unit depending on flow setting and model — plus a meaningfully higher startup surge wattage that a generator or backup power system needs to handle for the compressor motor's initial draw, not just its steady running load.
This surge number is where undersized backup power setups fail in practice: a generator rated for 500 watts continuous might advertise enough headroom for a 400-watt concentrator on paper, but a compressor motor's startup surge can briefly spike to two or three times its running wattage, and a generator without that surge headroom can stall or trip exactly at the moment the concentrator's compressor kicks on — which is the opposite of reassuring in an actual outage.
Portable pulse-dose units, particularly those running on their own internal battery, sidestep the generator sizing question during a home outage in the shorter term — that's precisely their appeal as a bridge device — but battery runtime is finite (hours, not days) and depends heavily on the pulse setting in use, so a portable unit is a bridge to restored power or generator setup, not a substitute for having one at all for anyone dependent on continuous flow.
For anyone building out a serious backup plan, the practical sequence is: confirm the exact running and surge wattage for the specific model in use, size a generator or battery backup system with real headroom above both numbers (not just the running figure), and test the full setup — actually running the concentrator off backup power, not just confirming the generator starts — before an actual outage is the first time it's tried.
