The 'anabolic window' myth: what protein timing research actually supports
The idea that protein must be consumed within 30-60 minutes post-workout to count has been substantially walked back by newer research.
The 'anabolic window' concept — that muscle protein synthesis benefits require protein intake within a narrow window immediately post-exercise — originated from early studies with specific, often fasted, protocols that don't generalize well to typical eating patterns. Newer research, including systematic reviews examining protein timing specifically, has found that total daily protein intake and its distribution across the day matter considerably more than hitting a precise post-workout window.
Muscle protein synthesis remains elevated for a meaningfully longer period after resistance training than the narrow 30-60 minute window implies — closer to 24-48 hours in some research — which means a meal containing adequate protein eaten within a few hours of training, rather than immediately after, still falls well within the physiologically relevant period.
The evidence-based priorities that have emerged from this research shift are, in order: total daily protein intake adequate for training goals (commonly cited in the range of 1.6-2.2 g/kg body weight for people resistance training), reasonably even distribution across meals rather than one large protein-heavy meal, and only then precise timing — which matters far less than the earlier 'anabolic window' framing suggested.
