Continuous SpO2 wearables: useful trend data, not a medical pulse oximeter
Overnight blood-oxygen tracking on consumer devices is genuinely informative for trends — and genuinely unreliable for the absolute number.
Consumer wearables that estimate blood oxygen saturation overnight use the same optical principle as medical pulse oximeters — measuring light absorption through tissue — but with less rigorous calibration, less consistent skin contact during sleep movement, and algorithms tuned for battery efficiency over precision. Validation studies comparing consumer SpO2 wearables to medical-grade fingertip oximeters typically find they track the right general direction while running a few percentage points off in either direction.
For someone with a diagnosed respiratory condition managing oxygen therapy, that margin of error matters: a medical decision about supplemental oxygen flow rate should never be based on a consumer wearable's SpO2 estimate. A dedicated pulse oximeter, calibrated and validated for clinical use, is the right tool for that specific decision.
Where the consumer version has genuine value is trend detection — a wearable that shows overnight SpO2 dips becoming more frequent or pronounced over weeks is a legitimate reason to bring that trend data to a physician for a proper sleep study or pulmonary evaluation, even though the absolute numbers shouldn't be treated as diagnostic on their own.
