Bone tissue responds specifically to mechanical loading stress, following a well-established physiological principle (Wolff's law, describing how bone remodels in response to the loads placed on it) — which is precisely why resistance training, placing genuine mechanical stress on bone through weight-bearing and loaded movement, stimulates a bone-strengthening response that lower-impact cardiovascular exercise like swimming or cycling generally doesn't provide to a comparable degree, despite cycling and swimming's genuine other cardiovascular benefits.
The specific type of resistance training matters for this bone benefit: exercises loading the spine and hips directly — squats, deadlifts and their variations, and similar compound movements — target exactly the skeletal sites where osteoporotic fracture risk is highest and clinically most consequential, making a resistance program that includes these movement patterns more directly useful for bone health than one built entirely around smaller isolation exercises or machines that don't load the spine and hips under real weight-bearing stress.
Starting or continuing resistance training later in life, even for someone who never lifted weights earlier, still produces a meaningful bone density benefit — bone tissue retains its capacity to respond to mechanical loading well into older age, and this is one of the more evidence-supported, concrete reasons resistance training deserves a place in a comprehensive plan for healthy aging alongside its more commonly discussed muscle mass and strength benefits, rather than being treated as a younger person's activity that's no longer worth starting later in life.
