Heart rate recovery after exercise: an underused fitness and mortality marker
How quickly your heart rate drops after stopping exercise is a distinct, independently predictive measurement from resting heart rate alone.
Heart rate recovery — the drop in heart rate in the first one to two minutes after stopping exercise — reflects parasympathetic nervous system reactivation and has been shown in cardiology research to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality, separate from resting heart rate or peak exercise heart rate individually. A slower-than-expected recovery (commonly a threshold around less than 12 beats per minute drop in the first minute is used clinically) has been associated with elevated risk even in people without diagnosed heart disease.
This is measured formally during a clinical stress test, but many fitness wearables now estimate it automatically from tracked workouts, comparing peak heart rate to the reading one or two minutes after activity stops — giving users an ongoing, trackable version of a metric that used to require a supervised clinical test to observe.
Like most single fitness metrics, it's more useful as a personal trend than a one-time verdict — heart rate recovery improves measurably with consistent aerobic training, which makes it a reasonable feedback signal for whether a cardio training program is producing the cardiovascular adaptation it's intended to.
