Co-viewing with active parental engagement and discussion has shown more favorable outcomes in several studies compared to identical content consumed solo, suggesting the social context of screen use matters as much as the screen itself.
Pediatric guideline bodies have accordingly shifted messaging somewhat from rigid time-limit numbers toward a more contextual framework emphasizing content quality, co-viewing, and ensuring screen time doesn't crowd out sleep, activity, and unstructured play — a more nuanced position than the earlier blanket-hour-limit guidance that dominated public messaging for years.
