The ABCDE rule — Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter greater than 6mm, and Evolution (change over time) — remains the standard mnemonic dermatologists teach for identifying moles that warrant professional evaluation, and it has genuine clinical validation behind it as a screening heuristic for the most common melanoma presentation.
Its documented limitation is a specific melanoma subtype: nodular melanoma frequently doesn't follow the ABCDE pattern — it's often symmetric, has regular borders, and can be small, making the classic mnemonic less reliable for catching this particular, notably fast-growing and aggressive subtype. Some dermatology sources now teach an additional 'EFG' rule specifically for nodular melanoma — Elevated, Firm, and Growing — to cover this gap.
The practical takeaway from this limitation isn't that ABCDE is unreliable — it remains a useful first-pass self-check — but that 'evolving' (change over time, including a new lesion that grows quickly regardless of how it otherwise looks) deserves particular weight, since a rapidly growing bump that doesn't fit the classic asymmetric-irregular pattern is exactly the presentation the standard rule can miss.
