Smart ring vs. smartwatch: which actually tracks sleep more accurately?
Both use similar sensors, but form factor changes what the data captures — and where each one tends to get sleep stages wrong.
Smart rings and smartwatches both estimate sleep stages using a combination of movement (accelerometer), heart rate, and heart rate variability, but validation studies comparing consumer wearables against polysomnography — the clinical gold standard — consistently find both categories perform reasonably well at total sleep time and much less reliably at distinguishing REM from deep sleep specifically.
Rings have a practical accuracy edge for one specific reason: the finger has better blood perfusion and less motion artifact than the wrist during sleep, which tends to produce cleaner heart-rate-variability signal — the input most sleep-stage algorithms weight heavily. Watches counter with larger batteries and more sensor redundancy, which matters more for daytime activity tracking than for overnight staging.
Neither should be treated as a diagnostic tool for suspected sleep apnea or other sleep disorders — consumer wearables aren't validated against apnea-hypopnea index the way a home sleep test or in-lab polysomnography is, and normal-looking sleep-stage data from a ring or watch doesn't rule out a clinically significant breathing-related sleep disorder.
