Swimming as cardio: the joint-health case for the most overlooked modality in the gym
Water's buoyancy removes most of the load that makes running and many gym exercises hard on aging or injured joints — without giving up meaningful cardiovascular training effect.
Water buoyancy reduces effective body weight by a substantial margin depending on immersion depth, which is the core reason swimming and water-based exercise show up so consistently as recommended alternatives for people managing joint pain, osteoarthritis, or recovering from a lower-body injury — the cardiovascular training stimulus stays largely intact while the repetitive joint-loading stress that makes running or high-impact gym work painful for these populations is dramatically reduced.
That doesn't mean swimming is purely a rehab modality; competitive and fitness swimming produces genuine cardiovascular adaptation comparable to other endurance modalities when trained with similar intensity and volume, plus a full-body strength component from the resistance water provides against every stroke, engaging muscle groups — particularly the back, shoulders, and core — that many land-based cardio routines undertrain.
The tradeoff worth knowing about is bone density: because swimming is non-weight-bearing, it doesn't provide the mechanical loading stimulus that bone tissue needs to maintain density, which is why swimming alone isn't sufficient as an exercise strategy for someone specifically prioritizing bone health — pairing it with some land-based resistance or impact training covers what swimming alone leaves out.
For anyone whose joint pain is limiting how much cardio they can comfortably do on land, adding or shifting toward pool-based training is a well-supported way to maintain cardiovascular fitness without the impact cost — ideally alongside, not instead of, some form of weight-bearing exercise a few times a week to keep the bone-loading stimulus in the routine.
