The 10,000-step target traces back to a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in the 1960s, not a specific research finding — which matters because it means the number was never derived from mortality or health outcome data in the first place. More recent large cohort studies tracking step counts against mortality have generally found meaningful risk reduction well below 10,000 steps, with the steepest part of the benefit curve often appearing between roughly 4,000 and 8,000 steps depending on the study population and age group.
Several of these studies found that benefit continued to increase with more steps but with diminishing returns after a certain point — the risk-reduction curve flattens rather than requiring a specific threshold to be crossed, which is a different shape than the popular 'must hit 10,000' framing implies.
The practical implication isn't that 10,000 is a bad target — more steps generally correlates with better outcomes — but that the specific number carries less scientific authority than its ubiquity suggests, and someone consistently walking 6,000-7,000 steps daily is likely capturing a substantial share of the available benefit rather than falling meaningfully short.
