What's become clearer from research following communities after major wildfire smoke events is that the effects don't reliably stop there — spirometry testing on exposed populations has shown measurable decreases in lung function persisting well beyond the smoke event itself, in some cohorts trackable for a year or more afterward.
The population-level mortality signal is significant: analyses of California wildfire seasons have attributed tens of thousands of deaths over a decade-plus period to PM2.5 from wildland fires specifically, a toll that's grown as fire seasons have lengthened and intensified across the western United States. For people with existing lung disease, repeated smoke exposure over consecutive fire seasons functions less like a series of isolated bad weeks and more like a cumulative respiratory stressor.
Practical exposure reduction is more achievable than most people assume: a properly sized HEPA air purifier in the bedroom, N95 or better masking during outdoor exposure on high-AQI days, and simply tracking a local air quality index rather than judging by whether smoke is visible — PM2.5 causes damage well before it's smellable or visible as haze. For anyone on home oxygen or with a chronic respiratory condition, an indoor air quality plan for wildfire season is worth building before the season starts, not during the first bad air-quality alert.
