CPAP rainout: why water collects in your tubing, and the settings that actually stop it

Rainout — water condensing inside CPAP tubing, sometimes enough to gurgle or spit through the mask — happens when heated, humidified air moving through the hose meets a meaningfully cooler ambient temperature and condenses back into liquid before it reaches the mask, the same physics as a cold glass sweating on a warm day. The heated air holds more moisture than cooler air can, and the tubing is where that temperature drop and condensation actually happens.
The most effective fix isn't necessarily turning the humidifier down, which sacrifices the humidification benefit entirely — a heated tubing option, which most current-generation machines support either built-in or as an add-on, keeps the air inside the hose warm along its full length rather than letting it cool and condense before reaching the mask. This addresses the actual temperature-gradient mechanism rather than working around it by reducing humidity output.
For machines without heated tubing, insulating tubing sleeves — fabric covers that slide over standard tubing — meaningfully reduce the temperature differential driving condensation, and are a lower-cost fix worth trying before assuming a full heated-tubing hose replacement is necessary. Room temperature itself matters too: a bedroom kept notably cooler than the rest of the house (common with air conditioning vents positioned near the bed) widens the exact temperature gap that causes rainout, and a slightly warmer bedroom setting can reduce the problem on its own.
If rainout persists despite heated tubing and reasonable room temperature, dropping the humidifier heat setting one or two increments is a reasonable next step — accepting slightly less humidification in exchange for eliminating water pooling in the hose, which for a lot of patients is the more disruptive problem of the two.
