Manufacturer-published battery life figures for portable oxygen concentrators are typically measured at a specific, often low, pulse setting under controlled lab conditions — a spec that tells you the maximum theoretical runtime, not what to expect at the flow setting you're actually prescribed, which for many patients is considerably higher than the setting used in the published test.
Battery runtime drops meaningfully as pulse dose setting increases, since each dose delivered requires more energy — the difference between a device's rated life at setting 1 versus setting 4 or 5 can be substantial, often cutting runtime by more than half, which matters enormously for trip planning.
Battery age and temperature are the other two real-world variables the spec sheet doesn't capture: lithium battery capacity degrades gradually with charge cycles over the device's lifespan, and cold temperatures reduce battery output noticeably — a device that comfortably lasts a stated runtime indoors may underperform meaningfully in cold outdoor conditions. For any trip where oxygen access is uncertain, planning around your prescribed setting's actual measured runtime, with a safety margin, rather than the marketing spec, is the more reliable approach.
